Ukraine has been hit by an April cold snap, which primarily affects fruit trees and vegetable crops, especially in the south. The Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Center reported that this year's frosts, lasting 4-6 days, are the strongest and most widespread in the last 10 years.
'In southern Ukraine, the trees not only blossomed but even formed ovaries. These crops cannot withstand such intense frosts. Therefore, the harvest of fruits in the South will be minimal. In the rest of the territories, it cannot be said that there will be no harvest at all, but it will definitely decrease,' said Tetiana Adamenko, head of the agrometeorology department. The most affected will be apricots, early varieties of cherries, plums, peaches, and vegetable crops, including potatoes. Uzhhorod became a record holder with a temperature of -8 degrees at night. In other regions, the temperature fluctuated from -3 to -7 degrees, while in the Odesa region, it was -2 degrees. According to Tetiana Adamenko, the cause of the intense damage to agricultural crops is the abnormally warm March. An early accumulation of heat occurred, leading to early flowering of fruit crops and grapes in April. Winter grain crops did not suffer mass damage, although their development may be delayed. The return of warmth will restore growth processes. The cold and snow temporarily halted sowing around the country. From April 11, the cold snap begins to retreat, starting from the western regions. In 2019, 2021, and 2023, cold snaps were also observed in April, but they were less intense and lasted shorter.
